In a word, authentication.  Try shifting from chat script (where you expect queries and supply login and password) to PAP .  Many ISPs do use PAP, including Prodigy.net and uswest.net, and some, like Pacific Telecom can't handle it at all.  Try all authentication protocols available from your mac
