Just as a follow up, I just finished installing Mandrake 7.0 on the same
computer.  It works fine, in other words, it installs the generic VGA
driver, completes the install, and boots.

So, the problem seems to exist with Mandrake 7.2 and 8.0, not with 7.0,
and uncertain about 7.1 (I don't have a copy).
