[newbie] Safe to use "shutdown -h now" from KDE session?

Hello, It would be nice to have a quick way to shut the system down without having to log out of KDE then hit the shutdown button. Is it safe to use the shutdown command from a terminal or a shell script durring a KDE session? Thanks David Nelson
