I would also like to encourage you to go the ethernet route (no pun intended)
for adsl. You are guaranteed it will work and more people will be able to
help you if you run into a problem. And as already pointed out, drivers are
not required.

heap of advice on modems.. I have been using a winmodem based on a lucent
chipset, using a driver from the linmodem site, successfully.

DSP.
Now I am very suspicious about the Personal Internet Appliance which uses
Debian doctored slightly. I know there is a PCChips MB (the 748MR) with an
on-board PC-Tel HSP 56K V.90 rotsa
Just FYI, I recently ran across a page of somebody who's working on a
Linux driver for the Lucent Tech. winmodem. Check out
http://www.close.u-net.com/ for more info. A hardware modem is still a much
better bet, though...
