I'm wondering if it's fair to ask this question, or to plug on myslef. I
think, though, that if I plug on myself, I will continue going to Win for

Back in Mandrake 9.2, I had something similar with a Minolta DimageX.
When I first plugged it in, nothing happened. Then the next time I
tried some days later, voila, it accepted it normally, meaning I could
mount it from root. It still wasn't automatically added to the desktop.

well I am not sure what you have done so far.
I found a directory called camera under /mnt/camera
I mount it and all is well.
That is in my Fedora partition.
At first I played around like you are but now I don't have to at all.
Maybe Fedora has an automount for usb??

the usb-storage module, this should allow your card reader to show up as a
hard disk, usually an emulated scsi disk, then you can mount the card reader
