Also be carefull not to choose Vsync and Hsync settings for your monitor that
are to high...I just installed a Voodoo3PCI card and chose settings for my
monitor that were to high and all I got for 1024x768 32bpp was a black

Try using XF86Setup instead of Xconfigurator.

I attempted to reconfigure the xf86config file by making sure that all of
the modes reflected the basic "640x48
