First it depends on how you login to your X sessions: a) from a console (terminal) or b) from a GUI login.
if a) do you use startx or xtart? if b) Depends on the default login manager you use. If you use the KDE one, then it is just a slot with a reveal button and each user (root included) can select which desktop they like. The one you used in the last session will be the one used for the next until you select another at login time. If you use the Gnome one then it is setup in a config file (which i dont know as i use the KDE one). If you are still having probs then perhaps you should supply more information for the list to assist. Usually too much info is more help than not enough.
