I am using a Hiro internal winmodem with a linmodem driver for4 the conexant
chip and I had no problem getting it up and running.

does appear in the Mandrake Control Center HardDrake under
Unknown/Others. It is correctly identified as a 3com 56k modem
Have you tried using setserial to setup the modem first?
