v9.2 of Mandrake.
Looks like I've finally got them pretty well sussed out here now.
If a native Linux port does not have sound - run it with artsdsp. Example -
"artsdsp rune".
If a WineX game does not have sound, go to

My sound card is C
Sound working in 9.1, installed 9.2 but no sound, I am informed it is
being used by another app. ps -A appears to show no other application
using the card.
On-board card SiS7012 (not the greatest, I know) using snd-intel8x0 -
this is installed and running.
Any suggestions, please?

Odd thing is if I turn arts off I don't get system sounds or anything from my apps
either.
Oddly Xine does not seem to be effected it being switched off.

I have a IBM300PL, a 200mmx box, and I am trying to get it to play a wav
file..
playwave /home/franki/sound.wav
it plays the first second, then it stops..
xmmx can play mp3's fine, the cdaudio works
but it won't play wav files.. its bizaar...
sndconfig finds the card, it play

I tried your suggestions and still no luck - I don't even know where to look next
- maybe re-install 7.02 and see what settings are in place - seems overkill. Not
having system sounds is certainly not a show-stopper, but its aggravating !

sndconfig and the sample sound is attempted, an error is displayed about not
accessing /dev/audio. I checked the permissions and it was set to root/sys. I
changed it to root/audio and also root/root - made no differenc

In 7.1beta3, with the updated drivers, I can play CDs, but no system

The motherboard is a FIC VA503A which has onboard sound.
In Windows device manager the sound is reported as
VIA AC97 PCI.

Yes there is, the isapnptools. But you will want to read the documentation in
/usr/doc/isapnptools/*. The information there is relatively complex, so be well
rested when you start. In essence what you do is run pnpdump >
/etc/isaapnp.conf then edit the /etc/isapnp.conf file for your specific setup

Try one of the Ensoniq chipsets. I think that is what the AWE cards were
built on, I know it's the chipset the SB PCI xxx boards use
