[newbie] tool bars for both gnome and kde are active

Somehos (I haven't a clue maybe some of you brainy types can tell me) I've got
both the gnome and the kde tool bars appearing on the bottom and as far as I
can tell gnome and Kde both appear to be working.  KDE applications are  still
on my screen but I can call up gnome applications at will.  How did I do this
and how do I get it back if I lose it?
