This may seem like an obvious question but did you remember to run
make modules and then make modules_install? I just recompiled the
same kernel and forgot to do those and it stopped at the same point
for me. Also the Install file mentioned something about removing a
preferred file in /lib/mod

Actually, the RPM kernel upgrades do take care of that. The process is similar
when you first install Mandrake. You did not have to compile a kernel then.
Most probably, the new modules that come with the kernel have problems with
your hardware, probably the sound card.

I installed the 2.2.7 kernel and did not install anything else. When it
booted after the new kernel was installed I received some errors. I
installed modutils with nothing else and the error went away. I was able to
get my IP masqerading going and all worked well. So I didnt touch anything
else.

I would think that the boot disk must be remade also. I know you must do
this with other operating systems after major upgrades, which is what you

I had the same problem. At the end all I did was I reinstalled all the
packages I downloaded from Mandrake and it worked. Get 2.2.5 from their
site. Beware of problems with printing, as the parralel ports must be
set manually. Read the parport.txt and lpd.text (or something like

major problem. I wanted to try to compile my kernel, but if I try to do 'make
xconfig' from /usr/src/linux I get the error

disconcertingly it took a second reboot for my sound card and network access
to work. I did check the Newbie archive but couldn't find any posts that
