either be already included on the computer when they buy it, or they'll pay

Have you tried typing "startx" from the command prompt? First, you have to
log in, as either "root" or as another name that you've entered. At the
prompt, type 'root' and then whatever password you chose, then simply type
'startx'. If you installed everything properly , then the WindowsX server sh

If you installed the Xserver then type startx at the command prompt.

in order to start your x windows you have to type startx, my experience
has been, this starts you in 8bit mode (ie 256 colors) if you type
startx -- -bpp 16
you get 16 bit color, you can also do 24 and 32, but you might have
problems with some apps written for 16 bit.

Chris,
Do you get a login prompt? Are you logging in ... If it just comes up with a prompt
after boot then this suggests you are in single user mode.
If you login try typing 'startx' at the prompt
This should bring up KDE as a default

Try startx! This starts the X-server that gnome and kde run on.
