"shutdown -h now" ... u should see some message scroll on your screen and then
the last message u should see is System halted or something like this...hen u

If you mean While waiting at the login prompt ctrl-alt-delete, and it will
run thru shutdown and then reboot.

login as root, type your password and then type
shutdown -h now. If you want to reboot, the change the -h
to -r.

You are full of questions aren't you. :)
If you are logged in as root type 'shutdown -h now'
Otherwise, if you are logged in as a plain user, or not logged in at all the
Vulcan nerve pinch (CTRL+ALT+DEL) will drop you safely but will want to
reboot. Either let it reboot or power it down before
