hi,
i forgot to mention that my "solution" in the previous post
is actually changing the default wm for the entire system,
so you may want to change it back after you run "vncserver",
if it affects your system behaviour
in my case, i use kdm locally, which doesn't seem to be
affected by whatever
hi Colin,
i'm pretty much a newbie myself,
so what i'm putting here is just what works,

so i'll assume you're running the server on Mandrake

it may be that X is started, but without

Thanks Shane. I think I understand the basics now.
I thought about my particular problem a bit more. First I don't have
room (with my current desk setup) for another monitor and keyboard.
Basically the old windows/linux box sits in a server bay in my desk with
the new linux server box. So I shoul
I thought RFBDrake just did windows terminal server emulation, but launching
it again, I'm not so sure. It seems to be too new to have documentation. All
I know is that I launch it and nothing happens. No errors, nothing.
The VNC java client works fine in Konq, but not Moz. The trouble with that

The VNC docs don't mention one, 'vncserver --help' doesn't, and google says
no too. So I guess there isn't a keyboard lock...

don't ya hate it when you solve it yourself mere moments after you post it?
for those are wondering, if you use bastille and let it screen out tcp
wrappers, rfbdrake as a server or VNC as a server will not run. naterally
you also need to open the neccisary ports in the firewall...

Dear Steve,
Thank you for your great help. I will be waiting to work on this until I get
my new LM8.1 installed. I found the LM8.1 Power Pack when I was out shopping
today, so I will be installing it within the next few days. After I get that
up and running I will begin setting up the VNC. I m
haven't used vnc myself yet, but currently researching it.
hopefully this will answer ur questions:

Dear Steve,
I am interested in using VNC. I have LM8 on my desktop and Windows 98/LM8
dual boot on my laptop. Is this like using IP masquerade or is it very
different from that?
Exactly what other information did you research to learn how to set it up?
What line did you edit and exactly how?
Thanks!
Actually, I found the site and some others that were helpful and now I have
it up and running on my local network as well as over the net. It works
pretty good for what I need it for.
All I had to do was edit one line and I was up and going. Oh, yeah, had to
change the router to allow

Hi Jared,
Rather then having vnc start automatically I suggest starting vnc only
when you need it. That is the best way to handle any service. Run it
only when needed! Somewhere in the Mandrake control center, you can
start and stop any available service. That is probably the easiest
way. I s
Matt,
I've seen similar messages on my system...same config...
1) It just DOESN'T work from a web browser on whatever port you try...I
have long since given up
2) The VNC viewer is looking to find out what "virtual" pc to connect to
ie... xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:1 (this is why I believ

This works like a champ! Here's what I did to make VNC work with not only
KDE, but kdm and I get to choose the window manager!
1. Delete (or comment) every line in ~/.vnc/xstartup
2. Start vncserver with the '-query localhost' option --> I also added
the -geometry 800x600 so that it'd fit nicel
I have had the same problem forest... I posted a similar message on the
expert board... My speculation is this .. Maybe a problem in one of the
Mandrake libs... I tried seeing if there were updates for the libs vnc
uses... I also tried compiling vnc native and it crashes a lot... Im at a
loss... I

James, a distro called muLinux has been using this for a couple of months
with great success. See http://sunsite.auc.dk/mulinux/
