What version of Mandrake are you using? Also, have you installed the kernel source
and headers? I believe you need both installed to compile the driver. I'm using
Mandrake 8.2 with 0.8.6 drivers. If you still are having problems, I can email you the
compiled files.

Winmodems are designed to work with Windows only. They do this by using
special drivers that put much of the work on the CPU; this allows them
to be made and sold much more cheaply. Sometimes they can be made to
work under Linux -- go to

WinModems are about 45% software driven. They get rid of some

As the specs state, the 56K modems are softmodems (winmodems), and
therefore aren't usable by Linux. There is some small chance that
somebody has released a program for using these modems under Linux. You
may want to check the websites that specialize in putting Linux on
Laptops.

The only version of Linux that I know of which has been successfuly installed on
notebooks to take advantage of winmodems is SuSE Linux.
www.elinux.com (or is it www.e-linux.com?)sells a lot of ibm thinkpds and provides
instructions on configurin the winmodem to work with SuSE. You might check

I got my LT winmodem to work fine in 7.0 (note: this is a *specific*
chipset) with the driver I found through www.linmodems.org
Complains about module being compiled for a different kernel, but
Winmodems = windows
they will not work in linux.
