When you get to root, from lilo for instance (boot: linux single --I think), run msec at whatever security level you have previously selected, or pick a security level and msec will (as I understand) set your perms properly. Msec is in /usr/sbin. BTW, welcome to the Perm Mangling Society. (PMS)
