Hey I am a new Linux user (Linux mandrake 6.0 or 6.5 I forget) and I am trying to configure my modem but I keep getting an error message that states can not open modem. The users guide states that I have to setup permissions for a user to be able to use the

any chance, and if so, where did you get the specs for it? Thanks!

Sam"it kinda just sat there" is not a good description of what
occurred when you typed startx. Also I don't understand the meaning of
"why I type in "X" it just hangs like a DaWg."
So, did you type startx alone on a console command line? Now two things
could happen other than going into KDE
Johner...how did this & the last one get addressed to you instead of
the list? Anyway, I got to thinking about this root thing and began to
wonder (I don't believe I've actually run xf86config as other than root)
what happens when an upriveleged user finishes running xf86config and it
goes to
Ok, I typed startx and it kinda just sat there, but, once again it might
have been a case error. Either way, why I type in "X" it just hangs like a
DaWg.

Johnroot! Not on my system? Here's my path as alan (an
unpriveleged user):
PATH=/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin::/usr/X11R6/bin:/home/alan/bin
Why would a program in a path segment that begins with /usr require root
priveleges?

I apologize, but as I am a TOTAL newbie, and typing xf86config(or as the
manual says XF86Config)does not pull it up. How do I run this?

Hi, Sam,
I've always preferred 'xf86config' for configuration of X. See if that
helps. Good luck,
