My bike's previous owner had the cap vent problem with fuel
starvation. He said a mechanic drilled a very tiny additional vent
hole in the cap just above where it seals. Its rather hard to describe
where it is. But I could send you a picture if you want.

never tried, using a wash
Pipes part of the problem ? Yes. Swap some of the plugs around and ride it for
awhile. check for soot on #3 again. You just might have to remove the carbs for
that. But then, it's not that bad you say.

V&H strikes again ! The problem is actually air speed in the carbs is too slow
at low speeds and it goes lean when letting off. Much has been written here
about that effect. Do you still have the intake snorkel on the air-box lid ?
Has to be there. Rejetting does not cure any of this.
