Re: Ot Mac OS upgrade

2024-10-22 Thread Larry Colen

I have read that since it is optimized for the M chips, the latest MacOS
will actually reduce performance on Intel based macs. I haven't seen any
quantification of how much, and if it depends on the machine.

I could easily see how with all of the memory on chip, the newer systems
could gain a lot of performance caching more data in the main memory
rather than in the cache closest to the processor.

2024-10-22 Thread Steve Cottrell
I run a 2012 MacBook Pro (hi res antiglare display) running Mojave (10.12) with
Davinci Resolve 16, Adobe CS6 and a whole bunch of video/audio apps that all
work really well. I took out the DVD drive and popped another SSD so there’s
two inside. It boots up from dead in 30 seconds and does everything I need it
to, including running all the stuff I need. Oh, and there’s 2 identical MBPs in
case one goes down.

If I had the cash, I would love a brand new MBP to run the latest Resolve on,
but the career will come to an end soon so no point for me. Instead I drool
over things like an Eibenstock Surface Shaver, or a new Beta 30 engine :-)

I will, however, treat myself to a retirement present at the end of next year:
a Panasonic GH6 or 7 if I can find one reduced. Can’t just stop making videos -
have to be weaned off ;-)

Hope all well

Yes, what Stan said. Let LrC upgrade your catalogs.

With macOS in particular, i have never seen a reason not to keep OS and apps as

My M1 Mac Studio is stuck with OS12 Monterey because I'd have to scrap
thousands worth of audio hardware if I were to upggrade the OS. Those
*beeep* at Apple have broken the Core Sound support for firewire audio
 in all later versions.

Hi David,

I’m still on Sonoma 14.6.1 on my macBook pro (that I type this on) since I
usually am not an early adaptor when upgrading OS’s.

However I DO want to stay current eventually. So at some point I will upgrade
again ...

What a mistake. LrC opens only the first 3 months of this year (though my

I have an M2 Mac Mini. I routinely do all the upgrades. They almost always add
more malware protection and convenience features. I haven’t had a problem in
recent years. In the bad old days of major architecture changes there were some
outdated software problems, but recent upgrades have been flawless. “Bricking”
a current model is usually due to operator error.
