They will quite happily run on 32-bit Windows 7 and 8. It's the 64-bit
versions of the OS that are the problem.

Fox2.6 should run fine on Win7 as long as the OS is still 32 bit. Been
doing it that way a long time.
If your Win7 is 64 bit, you'll have to run a VM that's only 32 bit and run
Fox2.6 in that.

Download and reinstall the Conversion Pack again. Ran into a similar
problem with Office2003 and XP/SP3 and a redownload and reinstall fixed it.

Win 7 Pro "comes with" a license for Windows XP. At least I didn't have
to enter a license when I created the WinXP virtual computer on the Win
7 Pro boxes. You do have to go through some kind of "validation" process
with Windows 7 Pro to confirm that it is a valid license before you are

I've had some success running an old Clipper DOS app in DOSBox.
Might be worth looking into as it's more integrated into the OS and
won't require a XP license.
This wasn't in a production environment, I just needed to restore a
backup that used a proprietry format.

And - Stephen - Your blatant and direct comments also Crack me Up - but,
I don't disagree with you. For the folks here being techies - some of
the feedback makes me chuckle. That being said - there are still some
interesting and valid points being brought up on both sides of the
equation...

I'm setting up all clients on Win 7 Pro and then installing the Windows
Virtual PC and Windows XP SP3 in that, with my FoxDos 2.6 running very
happily in the WinXP virtual computer. It even works on multi-core CPUs
(which regular WinXP on a multi-core CPU would not without some tweaking.)

Microsoft is ending all support for XP on April 14, 2014. There will be no
more security updates which is the biggest single immediate issue for current
users. There are some experts who believe that it will not be more than a few

Interesting. I can save .docx format in Office 97 on XP with the conversion
pack.
Thanks.

Compatibility pack works fine with all versions of Office from 2003 upwards on
XP and Windows 7.
You do need .Net 3.5 installed though.

Why not just catch the docs coming in and via one license convert them back
to any flavor older version you want?
Just write a service that polls a folder to see if anything is in there.
As you copy the documents to the "processing zone" you identify the nasty
"X" versions and flip them in the
