It isn't directly possible.
However, starting with QGIS 2.6 you can use the visibility presets
(bookmarks of combinations of layer visiblities) which can be used
directly in both the main window and the print composer. So you can
switch very quickly in both windows.

Hi Matt,
Once you have activated all the layers that should be displayed in your print
composer, select the map item inside your print composer and check the option
"lock layers for map item" in the properties tab.
