Ok it seems that pretty much all of your question were answered expect the
#1. Here's one way to doo it:
1) Create new empty txt file and rename it to e.g. SolidColor.material.
2) Write the following to the .material: (note the comments)
material SolidColor
{
technique
{
pass
This is quite true. The team over here is very busy, there's a lot of work
to do still. At first the focus is on using Naali to visit different worlds
and interact with other users, although we are also working on content
creation tools / imports.

I dont work for RealXtend but I can answer your question from developmental
experiance . At this point , Naali ( the new viewer) and Taiga ( the new
server ) are in very early stages of development .Hence , the 0.0.1
release status . Many features are as of yet unimplemented .
Am I missing something really obvious here in the viewer? Thank you
