I can't answer all of these, but: Your default runlevel is set in /etc/inittab. Look for a line like this: id:5:initdefault: I'm on a laptop that boots to X so my runlevel is 5 signified by the id:5 in the line above. If you want to boot to runlevel 3, let's say, then you would simply change the 5
