I have updated ticket 12339. It now includes a basic implementation of
free groups and finitely presented groups. It has limited
functionality, and maybe not the best implementation, but it works.
Please test it and do any comments that you consider relevant.

I think that you are confused about Chevie.
There was a 'Maple part of Chevie' written in 1995 which needs maple to
compute Green functions of red

If you are a Chevie lover, you can already have it in Sage in a fully
open-source way. As Jean pointed out, Chevie is also a GAP'3' <--
package
