From what I have learned, it should be taken in conjunction with Chondroitin and MSM to help the body absorb the better parts of it.  I also have a gel that comes in a tube that I rub onto my knees and other "achy" areas so it doesn't even go into the bloodstream, thus preventing the risk of too
