Improving mobility options for people with disabilities

    McGuinty Government Launches Segway Pilot

LONDON, ON, Oct. 20 /CNW/ - The McGuinty government is launching a test
pilot to expand mobility options for persons with disabilities, letter
carriers and police services, Transportation Minister Donna Cansfield
announced today in London.
"Allowing the use of Segways, a two-wheeled electric personal
transportation device, brings us one step closer to having an Ontario that is
accessible and inclusive to all," said Cansfield. "We are very excited that
today, we can offer persons who have a disability a wider range of accessible
transportation choices."
Under the pilot test, persons with disabilities who are 14 years of age
or over, letter carriers and police may use Segways on roadways and sidewalks.
Segways are not permitted on sidewalks where a municipal bylaw prohibits
it. The City of London will be the first municipality in Ontario to legally
allow persons with disabilities to use Segways on sidewalks.
As part of the five-year pilot, the province will evaluate how safely
Segways mix with other road users and pedestrians. A bicycle helmet must be
worn if the operator is under 18, and Segways must have lights and a bell.
"Providing accessibility is fundamental to reaching the full economic,
social, cultural and human potential of our province," said Chris Bentley,
London West MPP. "This is something my constituents have asked for and I'm
pleased the Ministry of Transportation is moving ahead with this test."
Segway operators will not require a driver's licence, written test,
vehicle registration or licence plate.
"Transportation is a key aspect of daily living. Everyone who lives in
this province should have the same opportunities to participate in all aspects
of community, and meet their full potential," concluded Cansfield.
