The TOSLINK receiver modules don't have very high bandwidth which can
make them problematical for higher rates. The limitation is probably of
the form:

Steve,
thank you - I was aware of this restriction, which is the reason for my
inquiry here. For some reason, though, my rDAC is playing 88.2 and 96

Okay, I finished my measurements using my PC soundcard. For testing

Phil,
yes, same files.
Okay, what I am doing now, I have taken my SBT up to my PC and
connected it to the SPDIF and optical input of my Soundblaster X-Fi.
This reads 24/96 and should have SOME way to display what my SBT is
actually outputting while playing these hi res files, right? Will

Phil,
sounds like good news! There is no sox.exe running. What I do find is a
process called "flac.exe", and I do not know what it is, but hey.
Still, what makes me sceptical here is that I already tested whether
rDAC Toslink Optical takes an 88.2 or 96 signal when generated my
MacBook. It does

Hi Phil,
yes, I tried both - FLAC streaming and PCM streaming. Effect is the
same, in both cases my 24/48 DAC happily plays a file that should be
24/96.
I change the PCM/FLAC settings in Files Types. No direct editing of the
sox command line. Double-checked that the same problem occurs with a

You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it
ain't what you'd call minimal.

What in particular are we looking for? I'll pick the right bits then.
A few ones that strike me as relevant:

Hello,
thanks for waiting.
I just confirmed that my "24/48" DAC still magically plays the 24/96
files that I am sending it via Squeezebox, and I confirmed that this
happens whether I send the files as FLAC (for native decoding) or as
PCM (decoded on the server).
In this mail, I am sending a fe

Phil,
thanks very much for putting some thought to my problem.
1) is not the case, I only have one SBT in my system, and the server
does only show this one device as recognized
2) have not fiddled, at least not knowingly. Is there any way and other

Thanks ray ... I do not think the DAC is doing anything at this stage. I
tried to feed the DAC with 24/88.2 and 24/96 via optical cable, sent
from my MacBook Pro, and it just will not take it.
So this is something that Squeezebox does. My optimistic guess is that
there is a handshake via TOSLink
First, I don't have any idea on what your DAC may be doing, I'll leave
that to more knowledgeable folks. But I KNOW via on screen display
thru my receiver that the Touch does play back Hi-Res Files, everything
registers correctly and even plays back some dts CD's that I have ripped
perfectly, and
Hello,
I have another question regarding possible downsampling of 24/88.2 or
24/96 files by Squeezebox Touch or the server.
I have followed the forums so far, noting that with standard settings,
my hi res files will not be downsampled when I stream them to my SBT. I
also understand that even tho

This is because normally when you sync your server transcode to 24/48
so that the SB3 can play, and all player
That was it! Works fine when the touch isn't synchronized with any SB3.
Thanks a bunch for the help. That wasn't something I would have thought
to check.

Ahh. I do have the touch sync'd with one other SB3. I will try changing
that an see what happens. Thanks.

Thanks for the quick replies.
I haven't tried getting playing them from the server yet. That is
certainly something I plan to try. But is there any reason they
shouldn't play from the USB port?

The Touch plays 24/96 files just fine. I don't have SB3's but I seem to
remember something about if the Touch and SB3's are synched, and because
SB3's will not play 24/96 files, it creates some sort of issue?

What happens when you index the files on your main Squeezebox Server (I
assume you have one to run 3 SB3s)
