AceLan Kao's patch [1] fixes the bug #969576 . So I can get working
kernel (no asus_wmi -error, working suspend) from [2] by applying
patches [1] and [3].

Like I mentioned in bug #969576 Salisbury's test kernel does not work.
When suspending the machine does not even try to shutdown (so the
behaviour is completely different than is described in this bug report).
It appears that patches [1] and/or [2] produces a completely new
problem.

system loads asus_wmi (asus_wmi: ASUS WMI generic driver loaded). With
3.2.0-20 it just loads the module and nothing crashes. :)

The computer appears to go down normally but then it tries immediately
start again and crashes. Keeps fans on and doesn't react anything.
I tested this patch from the upstream kernel and it fixes the issue:

Yes, power manager should definitely be aware of the external display
and not blank it when the laptop's lid is closed. Using a laptop with
