I just tried the daily-live Ubuntu release 14.04 and the regression
still there. Rotation button still not working.

Jeff, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com

On the version of Kernel 2.6.35 I used to get on the syslog when
pressing the Rotation Key: HP WMI couldn't recognize.. but since I
upgraded, I don't even get response on syslog and dmesg. Kernel
regression. This key used to work on old Kernel versions.

After switching to openSUSE I found this problem wasn't present.
Currently running 2.6.37.6 which is later than when this bug was first
reported in Ubuntu. Perhaps it's a module conflict or configuration
issue? Side button on tm2 appears as scancode 161.

Confirmed. .39 kernel. I get sporadic responses on both, the
/dev/input/event* device and on the corresponding xinput device. In ~5%
of the presses, I get reports, in the others, I get nothing.

I can confirm this problem, both in the current maverick
2.6.35-22-generic kernel and in the corresponding mainline
2.6.35-02063507-generic kernel. In both these kernels,
xinput test 16
(where 16 is the id of the HP WMI hotkeys device) is silent.
