I'm also seeing similair problem on my Dell XPS 1330. The laptop seems
very hot, with a constant fan and it starts scaling the cpu down to 800
MHz.

Desktop effects *are* working. My windows "explode" when they close.
Dialog "fold" down when they open and "fold" up when they close.

No, those options should just be enabled in the standard kernel build -
there is no reason not to do so for a desktop distribution like Ubuntu,
the only reason they are present is that these controllers are often
used in very small embedded systems where space may be at a premium.

This is fixed in the current Debian package (which also merges the
Ubuntu change which contains the bashism). A merge of that version would
fix the problem, or the patch against gutsy that is attached.

clients will attempt to contact the NIS server and have to time out when

Well, for the purposes of the trash applet rewrite that's going into Awn
Extras version 0.2.8, I'm only going to have feature parity with the
current gnome-vfs based trash applet. Implementing a "proper" trash
applet is outside the scope of this bug. Depending on time and

a few weeks after originally reporting the issue, but haven't seen it
for a while now. So presumably this was fixed in a later update?

To disable acpid logging, edit /etc/default/acpid and add "-l /dev/null" to the
end of the OPTIONS string. On my system, the line looks like this with the
change:
OPTIONS="-s /var/run/acpid.socket -l /dev/null"
I am running hardy amd64. Once in a while, /var/log/apcid gets so large
that it qui
