[Bug 2084971] Re: Unable to change power modes from balanced

2024-11-02 Thread zeldaoot
Sorry for the delay, I've been busy.

I hadn't tried doing that but i tried it now and nothing changed again.
Putting an underscore instead of a dash also didn't change anything.

Did you rebuild your initramfs after blacklist? Or maybe it's
"dell_laptop"?

It still appears loaded. Or something else is providing the platform
profile.

[Bug 2084971] Re: Unable to change power modes from balanced

2024-10-20 Thread zeldaoot
I did it I think, but I'm not entirely sure if I did it right.
Everything is still the same.

This is what I did:
sudo su
echo "blacklist dell-laptop" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Also, this is powerprofilesctl list with kernel 6.11.0-8-generic
zeldaoot@zeldaoot-Inspiron-5558:~$ powerprofilesctl list
  performance:
CpuDriver: intel_pstate
PlatformDriver: platform_profile
Degraded: yes (high-operating-temperature)

* balanced:
CpuDriver: intel_pstate
PlatformDriver: platform_profile

  power-saver:
CpuDriver: intel_pstate
PlatformDriver: platform_profile

Oh this is a Dell system? I thought it was a Thinkpad sorry.

Can you please try to blacklist dell-laptop and restart your system?

Does it still reproduce?

[Bug 2084971] Re: Unable to change power modes from balanced

2024-10-19 Thread zeldaoot
Tried starting with Kernel version 6.8.0-45-generic. I can now enable both
power saving and performance mode, but the high temperature warning is still
there.
powerprofilesctl list says:
zeldaoot@zeldaoot-Inspiron-5558:~$ powerprofilesctl list
* performance:
CpuDriver: intel_pstate
Degraded: yes (high-operating-temperature)

  balanced:
CpuDriver: intel_pstate
PlatformDriver: placeholder

  power-saver:
CpuDriver: intel_pstate
PlatformDriver: placeholder

[Bug 2084971] Re: Unable to change power modes from balanced

2024-10-19 Thread Mario Limonciello
This appears to be a kernel driver or platform firmware bug. If it's new
to this kernel upgrade then it's more likely a kernel bug.

You should report it against the Thinkpad ACPI driver upstream.

** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: power-profiles-daemon (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Invalid

(From the log you can see that you switched modes but then the kernel
changed it right back)

Can you please add -vv to the ExecStart command in the systemd unit and
then restart the daemon?

Share the journal output for the unit after reproducing.
