I think I have found the cause, although it seems a little odd. Yesterday the system ended up in the "powered down" state shortly after boot. I may have booted the wrong kernel. Anyway I rebooted to the 6.8.0-48-generic kernel and all was OK. Until my daily backup reported that it couldn't find the backup partition. Which was odd, as it is on the internal SSD (the NUC has an M2 NVMe and an SDD). So I shut down and removed the SSD to check it on another system in a USB caddy (it was fine) then put it back into the NUC. Now it was found again. Presumably there had been a dodgy connexion (the ribbon cable connexion to the motherboard?). So I wondered whether this had been the problem all along and tried booting 6.11.0-13-generic. This now seemed to be OK. It's still OK today. I'm using it now. So I'll close this. An odd bug though to have only affected 6.9+ kernels, when 6.8, and MS Windows was OK. 6.12.3 (mainline) also powers off after a few seconds and requires an off/on reset of the mains switch. On the mainline series: 6.8.12 is OK 6.9.0 runs, but any reboot leaves the system "hung". It shuts down, but does not restart, the power button on the box is lit (pressing it has no effect - it just stays lit) and I have to switch off/on at the mains. 6.9.12 6.10.1 and 6.10.14 are the same. The 6.11 series only runs for a few seconds before it completely loses power (chopped - no orderly shutdown) and ends up in this "hung" state. NOTE that I see the same problem if I boot from USB using the downloadable installation image. This is odd. I updated from 24.04 to 24.10. That worked OK. I was able to login and check things, ensure I had the correct packages installed etc. The next day I logged in, then started to have problems after ~15 minutes. But now, if I boot the system into 6.11.0-9-generic it halts shortly after the login screen is shown. I don't actually have to login to trigger this. OK - doesn't seem to be a temperature issue. I've disable BOINC, so there is no real load on the system at all. If I boot it and login to Kubuntu - (X11 session, as Wayland isn't usable) it will just stop a few seconds after I login. I'm wondering whether this is a processor temperature issue? The processor temprature is often reported as the mid 90s C (in /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone1/temp).
