I've spent enough time on 6.11.0-18-generic to be convinced the issue
does not reproduce anymore.

[Bug 2095100] Re: kernel panic when setting application in fullscreen

2025-02-18 Thread Pirouette Cacahuète
So it took me a bit more time but there was also a UEFI update coming
through, moved to 6.11.0-18 from oracular-propposed a few days ago.
Since, I have been able to use everything as before, and especially
tried multiple times to play fullscreen videos with success. Usually it
would fail after a few hours. Given the STRs being unclear, I cannot yet
declare victory, but things looks much better.

So at that point, two options IMHO:
 - the issue is some resource exhaustion that was caused by a third party (e.g.
firefox) and that got fixed in parallel (I run nightly)
 - some fix made it between 6.11.0-13 (from the initial report here) to
6.11.0-18 that I am running as of today.

I just got the issue at FOSDEM playing with Google Slides on Firefox, no
external display or anything. This time again the sessin got killed but
no kernel trace in dmesg. I suspect there's something misusing resources
and the kernel messages were just a consequence.

[Bug 2095100] Re: kernel panic when setting application in fullscreen

2025-01-26 Thread Pirouette Cacahuète
Wanted to edit an image in GIMP, happened again. Tried to get 6.13-rc to
boot, but with SecureBoot it's painful and too much time consuming for
me right now to setup something that works. I've kept
/lib/firmware/amdgpu to reflect the origin/master of current linux-
firmware repo, though, so maybe it's fixed by a firmware change? We'll
see.

If the mainline kernel were provided with secureboot signature that
would be easier to test.

[Bug 2095100] Re: kernel panic when setting application in fullscreen

2025-01-23 Thread Pirouette Cacahuète
Fun, I got another instance of the crash. My system was stable for the
last couple of days, I issued a `flatpak run org.freecad.FreeCAD`, which
started fullscreen, and boom. However, this time it seems it crashed at
GNOME Shell level, there's no trace in dmesg.

[Bug 2095100] Re: kernel panic when setting application in fullscreen

2025-01-22 Thread Pirouette Cacahuète
Yes it's easy as putting something in fullscreen, but as mentioned
earlier when I tried to get solid STR to make sure I could give a
straight answer whether it fixes, then I had difficulties. At some point
it reproduced but I don't know why at that moment I hit it.

So anything that I need to test should be a change I can use as a daily
driver since it may take hours / days to confirm.

> I clearly dont have time to play with (1) and rebuilding/maintaining a

clear STR so it means making this my daily driver.

I'm not suggesting you to keep using/maintaining such a kernel, it's a
debugging data point to prove whether the MST fixes I'm talking about
helped. If they help perhaps Canonical can do the backport.

Aaron can also potentially give you some test kernels if you can't
compile.

> That leaves only (2). Does this DRM debug enabling have an impact on
perf / features ? For the same reason, I'll need to keep it alive for
long periods, so it cannot disturb my work.

It will fill up your logs (and thus your disk) leaving it on. From your
description ("anytime I set an application in fullscreen mode") I was
under the impression this was easy to reproduce (IE just full screen an
app with the monitors connected). Is that not the case?

If it's that easy to reproduce maybe Aaron can try too.

> If there's a kernel from 25.04 (assuming it's 6.13?) that could be
rebuilt and signed for 24.10, that may be also a way

Not that I can tell.

That leaves only (2). Does this DRM debug enabling have an impact on

If there's a kernel from 25.04 (assuming it's 6.13?) that could be

[Bug 2095100] Re: kernel panic when setting application in fullscreen

2025-01-22 Thread Mario Limonciello
From the trace this is triggered from a userspace IOCTL to remove a
framebuffer. This causes drm core to process atomic_remove_fb() as
work, and this will use the drm driver to do atomic modesets.

One of the things that happens for this is going to be recalculating MST
DSC configs (if appropriate). You can see more about this in
compute_mst_dsc_configs_for_link().

Returning -ENOSPC I would guess happens as part of
drm_dp_mst_atomic_check() meaning the atomic check failed.

I think this should be debugged in two ways.

1) Try a mainline 6.13 kernel. I know for a fact we had a variety of
MST/DSC fixes that have gone in since 6.11.0. Most of them are in
stable 6.11.y and 6.12.y, but the Canonical kernel isn't tracking
stable.

Unfortunately; it seems that the Canonical kernel PPA is effectively
dead, so you'll have to compile this yourself.

2) Turn on dynamic debug for DRM (drm.debug=0x106 on kernel command
line) and turn up log buffer length (log_buf_len=50M). Then there will
be some more messages that come in (for example the debug message in
drm_mode_rmfb_work_fn()) and compute_mst_dsc_configs_for_link().  This
will help give more hints where the -ENOSPC is coming from.

Before rebooting, I was trying to reproduce again and now I dont
reproduce. Error -28 is -ENOSPC. I'm wondering if the problem requires
more time to present **or** if it depends on more applications / windows
running.

2025-01-16 Thread AaronMa
Could you try if this issue is still there with upstream kernel and
latest amdgpu firmware?

v6.13-rc3 kernel:
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/mainline/v6.13-rc3/

update amgpu firmware manually:
1, rm -rf /lib/firmware/amdgpu/*
2, git clone
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git
3, cd linux-firmware; sudo cp -r amdgpu/* /lib/firmware/amdgpu/

Then reboot to upstream kernel 6.13-rc3 to check if this issue is still
there.
