Two more systems done. Neither had any :i386 packages installed. Things still don't seem to be completely OK. They had essentially the same packages installed before the upgrade. One of them decided to remove scribus, and took 20mins to run the "Searching for obsolete software" part. The other did not remove scribus, and took <2mins to run the "Searching for obsolete software" part. (The dist-upgrade log for *bnoth* systems did actually contain: MarkDelete scribus:amd64 < 1.6.3+dfsg-0.2build1 @ii K Ib > FU=0 ) When I did install scribus again the issue seemed to be related to this: The following packages will be REMOVED libqt5gui5-gles libqt5quick5-gles libqt5quickparticles5-gles The following NEW packages will be installed libqt5gui5t64 libqt5opengl5t64 libqt5quick5 scribus 0 to upgrade, 4 to newly install, 3 to remove and 0 not to upgrade. [Bug 2106202] Re: Kubuntu 24.10 do-release-upgrade and Steam (or other) dependencies installed produces not booting desktop
I just upgraded my daily driver using the test plan above and it worked for me. I am using Steam and have i386 libraries installed so I had fortunately seen the news on this before trying to upgrade earlier. It seems to have worked for me. Some notes on my system: * I was using kernel 6.14.2-061402-generic as installed via the tool 'mainline' from ppa:cappelikan/ppa * My system is dual boot Windows 11 -- no issues with grub * Upgrade finished in less than 15 minutes Issues Encountered: * Not really an issue but I have rclone installed by deb from rclone.org so I got the "unofficial packages" notice on it * I got an error about a file I never modified: "Configuration file '/etc/GNUstep/gdomap_probes' ==> File on system created by you or by a script.". I never modified that file, and after examining it I decided to choose to install package maintainer's version instead of default to keep the file. * I don't know if this is normal in upgrades, but my apt source for kopia disappeared and I had to delete sources list file for the cappelikan/ppa and run `sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cappelikan/ppa` and follow directions again from https://kopia.io/docs/installation/#linux-installation-using-apt-debian-ubuntu I have included what debs and snaps I had on my system before and after the install. BAD NEWS here. I've just upgraded my desktop, enabling pre-released updates first, and once again kubuntu-dektop was removed (along with ~350 other packages). Done Reading state information... Done Foreign Packages Installed The following unofficial packages are currently installed: go-mtpfs.Installed from: unknown origin gocryptfsInstalled from: unknown origin It is recommended to install supported versions from the Ubuntu archive, and try the upgrade again. [Bug 2106202] Re: Kubuntu 24.10 do-release-upgrade and Steam (or other) dependencies installed produces not booting desktop
I can confirm it work for a system without libc:i386 installed, too. A nice irony is that this system runs all of the time (and has a screen - an old TV, usually switched off), so I want the desktop, but not anacron (I want to define when my backups etc. will run and you can't mark anacron as "not running" if it is installed). So after the upgrade with -m desktop I have to purge anacron, which also removes kubuntu-desktop (but fortunately leaves behind everything it pulls in). What would the signs for this be, can we add a check to the test plan? I suppose it would mean massive removals, or that the desktop packages would be removed, something like that 1. [Bug 2106202] Re: Kubuntu 24.10 do-release-upgrade and Steam (or other) dependencies installed produces not booting desktop
Please expand the test case a bit. It currently just says: "The upgrade should complete without errors, and the VM should reboot into plucky after the upgrade." Suggestions: - check if libc6:i386 is still installed (and was upgraded) - confirm desktop environment is installed (obvious, but...) - since steam was mentioned, how about we test a release upgrade with steam installed? This sounds like it will address the user story from the bug description, even though libc6:i386 was deemed to be the root cause. But I suspect we need steam the deb, not steam the snap, right? And about this regression potential: "If any problems did occur from this, it would most likely be seen in the calculation step.". What would the signs for this be, can we add a check to the test plan? I suppose it would mean massive removals, or that the desktop packages would be removed, something like that. Just add a spot check to the test plan to confirm that the calculation mentioned in this regression potential seems fine. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2106202 Title: Kubuntu 24.10 do-release-upgrade and Steam (or other) dependencies installed produces not booting desktop To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+bug/2106202/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This can be from the command line via 'do-release-upgrade', or invoking that with the commands to launch the GUI installer, or from the system tray upgrade notification dialogue. * The bug does NOT seem to be triggered when a system is upgraded with the old fashioned switching of software sources from oracular to plucky and doing 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' or 'sudo apt full-upgrade'. * This seems to be a bug related to the upgrader itself and how it treats/resolves dependencies and implements an upgrade. * To the user the upgrader presents what seems to be a sane and sensible summary of what the upgrade will do. i.e. the number and names of packages to be upgraded, newly installed and removed, look sensible. It does not propose to remove the kubuntu-desktop, or other core plasma desktop packages etc. Just packages that one would expect due to deliberate breaks/replaces on old conflicting versions etc. * It is only when the upgrader performs the upgrade that it diverges without warning from the proposed upgrade, and removes key desktop meta packages and other packages. * Then subsequent clean up of 'obsolete packages' then proposes to remove even more, presumably as the packages that did depend on them were removed in the previous upgrade stage. * As widely commented, later re-installing the kubuntu-desktop meta package should restore what was incorrectly removed via the upgrader. *** end of additional comments *** ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 25.04 Package: ubuntu-release-upgrader-core 1:25.04.11 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 6.14.0-13.13-generic 6.14.0 Uname: Linux 6.14.0-13-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.32.0-0ubuntu3 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: unknown CrashDB: ubuntu CrashReports: 640:1000:110:175125496:2025-03-29 12:39:16.258547358 -0600:2025-03-29 12:38:59.705217907 -0600:/var/crash/_usr_bin_plasmashell.1000.crash 640:1000:110:4231423:2025-03-30 12:15:26.452457354 -0600:2025-03-30 12:15:25.246440280 -0600:/var/crash/_usr_libexec_ibus-ui-gtk3.1000.crash CurrentDesktop: KDE Date: Thu Apr 3 21:06:53 2025 InstallationDate: Installed on 2025-03-29 (5 days ago) InstallationMedia: Kubuntu 25.04 "Plucky Puffin" - Beta amd64 (20250324.1) PackageArchitecture: all SourcePackage: ubuntu-release-upgrader UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. http
