Seems like it's still a bug in Wayland according to comment #13. Do you
mean you want us to close this?

[Bug 2110949] Re: No output to USB-C monitor after logging in with the laptop closed

2025-06-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Probably not. Early boot graphics is controlled by the BIOS. So if the
BIOS has chosen not to light up a monitor by then, we can't use it till
the OS and full graphics driver stack loads later. Usually the BIOS will
only display on one monitor, whichever it deems to be primary.

GRUB probably has no notion of "monitors". At that stage there is only a
graphics framebuffer (EFI/VBE/VGA) provided by the BIOS.

[Bug 2110949] Re: No output to USB-C monitor after logging in with the laptop closed

2025-06-12 Thread Sanjit Raman
Seems to be much better on Wayland, the screen still doesn't appear
automatically after logging in (either spamming ENTER or clicking the
mouse seems to wake up the computer to output a usbc signal, or
alternatively removing and replugging usbc cable also worked) after
which fan starts spinning and we get a signal.

Weirdly it did log me out one time after I logged in and spammed ENTER.

At least it is not blacking out my computer so that is great!

A tangential question: is there a way to get GRUB to also show up on
these monitors because atm I blindly press ENTER to try and speed up the
selection of the OS.

Hi, just saw this message.

Could you clarify how I should select Ubuntu on Wayland at the login
screen?

[Bug 2110949] Re: No output to USB-C monitor after logging in with the laptop closed

2025-05-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The weird flickering mentioned in comment #8 is probably bug 1924689
which we shouldn't confuse this with.

This bug may also be Xorg-specific though. You are being given Xorg
sessions by default due to the presence of the Nvidia driver. But
frankly if all your monitors are connected by USB-C then that's not
necessary and suboptimal. Please try selecting 'Ubuntu on Wayland' at
the login screen. I would be very surprised if a Wayland session and
Xorg both exhibit this bug in the same way.

[Bug 2110949] Re: No output to USB-C monitor after logging in with the laptop closed

2025-05-26 Thread Sanjit Raman
I tried a fresh reboot, and it just doesn't work with the laptop lid
closed. When it is open, it is fine (though still takes a decent 10-15s
to configure itself.

Attached is the result of journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt (though note
that this boot is probably the boot from when I booted with the lid
open, otherwise there is no other way to run this command)

[Bug 2110949] Re: No output to USB-C monitor after logging in with the laptop closed

2025-05-26 Thread Sanjit Raman
just rebooted - now i have to reconfigure the monitors. by the way, i
noticed a weird flickering around the settings window shadow which
looked like old/mangled frames (see attached). it disappears upon
quitting settings (the x close window button doesn't seem to work) and
then reopening -- after which things become normal.

i am now going to try a new reboot to see if we get a usbc signal after
logging in.

[Bug 2110949] Re: No output to USB-C monitor after logging in with the laptop closed

2025-05-26 Thread Sanjit Raman
Hi Daniel,

Thanks -- I deleted the ~/.config/monitors.xml file, and logged
out/logged in again (lock/unlock screen), but actually I didn't need to
perform (3, position monitors), it seemed to have remembered the
configuration from somewhere else. I will do a reboot now and see if it
will appear correctly after restarting.

[Bug 2110949] Re: No output to USB-C monitor after logging in with the laptop closed

2025-05-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The size of your ~/.config/monitors.xml is unusual and might be causing
confusion. Please try:

1. Deleting ~/.config/monitors.xml
2. Log in again with the laptop open.
3. Position your monitors again in the Settings app.
4. Drag the Settings window to an external monitor.
5. Disable the laptop screen in the Settings app so it does not form part of
the remembered configuration.
6. Close the Settings app.
7. Close the laptop lid.
8. Log in again.

If that doesn't solve it then please reboot and run:

  journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.
