Right click on the volume control icon (top right) and select 'Open
volume control'
Click on Preferences. Is 'Capture' ticked? If not, tick it.

because I couldn't get sound on some of the vids I have been transfering
from windows to Ubuntu. In the process, I can now no longer install
using deb instal

The sound card is a Realtek - the sounds work, my Logiteck webcam works
but it won't see the microphone at all. (Plugged into the Mic jack on
the side).
Any tips on how to get the mic working?
