@TIm: I have had the same issue with all recent (last four?) Ubuntu releases on my older PNY 6800GT. If you boot and wait, you will notice that the X display seems to re-initialize itself at regular intervals (every 2-3 minutes iirc). You can try and switch to a VT as the display tries to re-init
