Yeah, that'show I logged in when I got this error from a "root shell
with networking".
But when I boot normally, there is no network, so SSH doesn't work. I
can't even ping the machine. The desktop "appears" normally, but with
the "Failed to load HAL" (I think, not sure of the phrasing) error

OK, but this is expected, I believe, because I am running in "Drop to

I ran a set of updates a few weeks ago that caused my (remote) ubuntu
Jaunty system to not boot up.
