i have a similar problem. i am using nvidia 96.43.14 and if I click on the
password box gdm crashes and restarts. I can however use xdm just fine. i am
using lucid all up to date as of 4-20-10.
here are log ouput:

I did see a message about plymouth as my boot line has quite and splash removed
from it. however the plymouth line is NOT in dmesg s
this is not fixed for nvidia driver 96. no sure what to post here to
show you it doesn't work.
