problem. The VGA output works fine when the monitor is plugged in at
boot up, but not if plugged in after booting.
By the way, I didn't state this before, but the VGA output worked fine
under Windows, even when plugged in after

It took me several hours, but I eventually found a way to flash the
BIOS. (None of the suggestions online worked.) It's now v3.20
