I do not have access to that computer right now.
But the same problem appeared today with my laptop, which is also
running KUbuntu 18.04 with an NVIDIA card (Geforce 840M) and with driver
390.77.

It appears you're using NVIDIA 396.45, which isn't supported. Did you
find the same bug with the official driver 390.48?
To install that you would need to remove the PPA and then: sudo apt
install nvidia-driver-390
