I did a clean install with ubuntu 10.04. The screen itself is no longer
freezing or going black. I can even use normal visual effects now.
The only thing that still happens when watching some videos, the screen
is sometimes shaky while the audio just continues. No matter if it's

My freeze problems went away after this configuration:

System is stable with no effects on, screen saver off. Any 3D starts
the freeze issue and soon requires hard reset. Before total freeze,
navigation slows with new windows reverting to a code pattern listing in
panes like corruption.

I bought a new motherboard and cpu. This motherboard doesn't support
AGP, but I had some old - but still working - PCI video card (it's
really PCI and not PCI-E). Unfortunately I have random crashes/freezes
just like I had with that person that I've installed Ubuntu on. After a
quick look it appear
I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a person his pc (dual boot with Windows)
where it also had random crashes/freezes. When I switched off "visual
effects" it seemed better, but I only had less crashes on that system.
It was not that the problem was solved. This looks like a (very) severe
bug to me, as

Karel, thanks for posting this link.
I read the other bug and I actually think this bug might be related. I noticed
some similarities and this bug also affects Compiz. Although it isn't the same
ATi card, it sure is from the same series. I'll post a link to this bug in the
other tread.

Well to be honest, my computer hasn't crashed heavily or repeatedly yet. It is
more like freezing and then it works again. I also notice it when watching
video's (or at least trying to) that it hangs sometimes. Especially with Miro.
Gimp is of course a pain in the ass when I want to use heavy br
I suggest you to reinstall Jaunty until this bug is addressed - repeated
crashes can destroy a filesystem and I had even to run fsck manually
today to repair a partition (with considerable delay of startup).

I am indeed using Karmic (9.10), I'm facing some freezing problems as well.
especially when minimizing or maximizing a window. Sometimes I think it's the
operating system that blocks, but it's actually the graphic card where the
problem is. I've also tried to install proprietary drivers, but aft

The problem is not in proprietary drivers, since people say Ati does not
support. Both distro versions use open source drivers, but probably there is a
regression in the new series.
