I also encountered this bug, but only the first time I ran gtg. I
suspect it’s a problem of getting a little trigger-happy and trying to
launch gtg before installation of python-configobj is complete. I don’t
know if there’s anything Ubuntu can do about this, though.

The problem with gecko-mediaplayer is as I said. For me at least, it
works very infrequently.
I click the link, it plays. I then close the window and it won't play
again --- the new window opens up, the plugin loads, and then it just
sits there at "Stopped". Clicking play has no effect

If not, and I need to install something else, Ubuntu should not be
prompting to install these plugins.

mozilla-mplayer sort of worked, but had some problems with aspect ratio.
When I chose to install mozilla-helix-player, it simply asked for
installation of missing plugins again after a browser restart.

By default, when choosing Media-> Open Disc in vlc, it selects /dev/sr0
by default. Unfortunately, if /dev/sr0 doesn't exist, this doesn't
work. The dropdown selection doesn't do anything at all; I have to type
in /dev/sr1 or /dev/dvd manually.

Actually it's a duplicate of bug #324645 -- but that bug is supposedly
fixed in cups 1.3.9-15 (I'm using 1.3.9-17).
But removing apparmor did fix the problem.

After a little more work, it appears that when xrandr is run for the
first time, it sets the external display to resolution 1360×768, which
the connected monitor does not support. Thus the screen goes blank.
