Strictly speaking: no, timidity is not a mandatory dependency of rott.
rott can (or should) be able to run without timidity with disabled sound.
You can check this by calling "rott nosound" in a terminal, that will start
rott without sounds and it shouldnt hang anymore.

You're running 8.04 (Hardy) and have the hardy backport version of PokerTH.
Which version do you expect to upgrade to? Intrepid and Jaunty have 0.6.3 too,
so no real upgrade for you, only Karmic would offer 0.7.
