Thanks for your answer. At the point I sent the bug report it was a
problem in Jaunty, but not in Hardy... weird.
Now I checked it again in both Hardy and Jaunty, and looks like I can
indeed print to PDF printer with 700 permissions. Probably some
installed update solved the issue.

700 permissions on my home directory work fine for me in Karmic. Is
this still an issue for you?
