Postdoctoral Research Position in "Big Data Analytics Systems" at TU Berlin

Area of Work
The Database Systems and Information Management Group (DIMA) at
Technische Universität Berlin is looking for a postdoctoral researcher
in the area of "big data analytics", for an initial funding period of
one year, with the option for extension for up to another three years.

The goal of Stratosphere is to jointly with researchers at other
institutions in Berlin, Europe, and worldwide conduct research and
build a large-scale data processor for executing complex data analysis
programs on huge, heterogeneous, high-velocity data sets. We plan to
conduct research that will lay the foundation for automatic optimization
and processing of stateful and iterative data analysis programs in a
massively parallel, fault-tolerant way. We will be researching a data
programming model based on functional programming, bringing together
compiler technology (Java, Scala, JVM) and parallel database systems and
query optimization. We will be looking at real-world use-cases in the
area of machine learning, information extraction, and data profiling.
Our work will be made available open-source. We intend to evaluate our
research jointly with other research institutions and companies in
real-world application settings.

Requirements:
Applicants should have completed a PhD in database systems, and have the
zeal to work in a leading research environment at the forefront of
technology innovation, interested in building systems and putting
research results into practical use. Ideally you have specialized in the
area of query processing or optimization, during your PhD, with
additional skills in programming languages and compilers, distributed
systems, programming languages design, parallel programming, or
benchmarking and system evaluation, documented by a strong publication
record. A good knowledge of Hadoop internals, the map/reduce programming
model, as well as parallel database implementation skills will be
useful. Moreover, a good command of skills in the areas of mathematics,
statistics, as well as analytical and project management skills will be
useful. Proficiency in English is a prerequisite. German is not
required, but basic German skills or interest in learning the language
will be helpful for day to day interactions.

About Berlin, TU Berlin, and the School of Electrical Engineering and
Computer Science (EECS):
Berlin, the capital of Germany, is a cosmopolitan, international city in
the heart of Europe, with a very large research and science ecosystem as
well as a very active and dynamic startup scene, in particular in the
information technology area.

TU Berlin is one of the leading science and engineering universities in
Germany. TU Berlin is also the German node of the ICT Labs of the
European Institute of Technology (EIT), the leading European science and
technology institution funded by the European Commission, focusing on
teaching, research, and innovation in the area of information and
communication technologies.

The EECS department at Technische University Berlin (TUB) is
consistently ranked among the top places in evaluations such as the
CHE-ranking, with several faculty members winning prestigious awards
(e.g., scientific awards like the Leibniz Award, Alexander-von Humboldt
Professorship, or even Emmys).

To apply please, submit an electronic application in the following form:
- motivation letter
- complete CV
- copies of certificates from all degrees (BSc, MSc, Ph.D.)
- list of publications, including three examples
- references with contact information (e-mail, phone) in a SINGLE pdf to
Volker Markl (p...@dima.tu-berlin.de) at Technische Universität Berlin.

Please note that applications not following this format will not be
considered.

There is no fixed deadline for applying. Positions will be filled as
soon as possible.
