Who knows... mod_perl is a law unto itself :-)

- install as root to allow mod_perl's install script to write where it pleases 
(to be fair, it is unlikely to do anything nasty to your Perl distro).
- install a perl distro *just for apache* (eg, /usr/local/apache/perl) and use 
this when installing mod_perl (NB, you will then have to use this distro in all 
scripts that use mod_perl - #!/usr/local/apache/perl).
