The analysis states that Linux may be free, but there are costs associated with putting it on a mainframe. They pointed to IBM's zSeries mainframes and the costs to get enterprise-class Linux support and maintenance services, costs that can get into the $25,000 to $30,000 per year range. SERVER SALES RUN INTO THE (BIG) BLUE | Reuters Gartner has released some server numbers. The second quarter of 2002 belonged to IBM; the company pulled in 30% of the world's server spending. But Sun hardly sat still -- it had the fastest rise in market share. HP ruled the unit volume roost. Compared to the same period last year, global server sales fell by more than a billion dollars. BRIEF: TADPOLE LAUNCHES UNIX NOTEBOOK | Computerworld Solaris 8 will be the OS that runs Tadpole Technology's new SPARCbook 5000 notebook. Tadpole claims the thin, seven-pound product has the power of a complete Sun workstation and is totally binary-compatible with Sun desktops and servers. CALDERA NAME CHANGE PUTS UNIX FIRST | CNET Some business card company in Lindon, Utah is about to get a tall order. Caldera International is changing its name to the SCO Group. Evidently the letters "SCO" carry more weight and might give the company a higher profile. Caldera distributes two SCO Unix versions--OpenServer and UnixWare -- as well as Linux. UNIX DOMINATES DOWN UNDER | ZDNet A recent survey of Australian tech execs shows most of them would like to have Unix on that deserted island. A poll asked them which server OS they would choose if they had the choice. Unix was number one, followed by Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Novell. A family in the U.K. managed to fly to Florida for about $23 apiece -- cheaper than the price of one person's meal at Cinderella's Royal Table. Did they hitch a ride on Dumbo's back? Close. Actually, an online travel service called First Choice mistakenly listed the Florida fares. The Dryer family bought six tickets and hoped that Disney magic would keep First Choice in the dark. It did -- until the Dryers got back home and told the media how they had all popped across the pond for about the price of a single one-way ticket from Fort Lauderdale to Orlando. First Choice said a staff member is the one who made the Dopey mistake. The company let the Dryers get away with it and ate the $4,500 it lost. >> CLICK: http://www.vnunet.com/News/1134595 >> To view our complete collection of offbeat tales from the world of information technology, CLICK: http://searchsolaris.techtarget.com/bestWebLinks/0,289521,sid12_tax292504,00.html ********************************************************************* Do you find this email useful?
