Palmisano described "On-Demand" as a new enterprise IT infrastructure strategy that will use grid computing and autonomic technologies to fully integrate systems with those of customers and suppliers and increase an organization's responsiveness. INTEL TURNS UP THE HEAT ON SUN | IT-Director.com Intel has released three new superfast Xeon chips in an effort to put pressure on Sun and its UltraSparc line of processors. The new chips are updated versions of Intel's Xeon line for four and eight processor servers. The fastest of the new chips runs at 2GHz and contains a 2MB tertiary cache. Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and other server vendors are expected to adopt the new processors relatively quickly. OPERA RELEASES FREEBSD VERSION, UPDATES LINUX | internetnews.com Opera has unveiled two new versions of its Web browser for FreeBSD and Linux. Opera 6.1 is now compatible with eight separate operating systems, including Windows, Linux, Mac, OS/2, Solaris, FreeBSD, QNX and Symbian. Company officials also announced a browser update for Linux users on Intel and PowerPC machines. The Linux update features bug fixes and support for Xft 1 and 2, foreign language font support and the use of Qt 3 libraries. SUN QUESTIONS MICROSOFT'S ANTITRUST COMPLIANCE | CRN The consent decree between Uncle Bill and Uncle Sam goes into effect Friday, but not everybody thinks Microsoft will abide by it. Sun Microsystems has reportedly complained to the DOJ that Microsoft's communications protocol licensing program still doesn't match the "letter and spirit" of the settlement. Linux backers have made similar complaints.
