ME was definitely junk. XP Home is OK. 2K Pro or XP Pro are better. I
am a net admin, versed in NT, 2K, XP, Unix, Linux.... I'm not a MS zealot
or a Linux zealot. I'd have a hard time pushing any non-technical person
toward Linux. Just one of the reasons is lack of apps available. I also
can't stand XP's interface, so I switch to the 2K-like interface.

I've been with 2 different organizations the last 6 months (got laid off
and now am in a wonderful stable job that I absolutely love), and in both
places we "back-tracked" to 2K Pro instead of the pre-installed XP Pro on
new PC's. The reason? Concerns about a couple of proprietary apps that
hadn't certified XP, and the users' unfamiliarity with XP. When I have a
valid "business" reason to move everyone to XP, I will suggest it to my
bosses. But I don't want half of the PC's with 2K and the other half with
XP, because the users are not "techies". If I want them to be able to
help each other in small ways with some of the apps (which I am not versed
in), I need to at least give them the same OS.

One thing I would recommend to anyone is to get some anti-spyware
software. I have had over a half dozen co-workers and former co-workers
whose PC's have been hijacked by these things. As far as I am concerned,
many of these spyware things are nothing but viruses. The only difference
is they are created by companies instead of individuals. Any software
that kills your internet access, corrupts your network drivers, stops you
from being able to use Windows Explorer, doesn't let you access your
programs menu, etc., is a virus. That is what is happening. I had to
reformat one PC, as all of the research I did on the web could not give me
the fix. The others I have fixed. But even then, I've had to do registry
edits, which the average user could not do. BUT, make sure the
anti-spyware software is legit. Some of them out there are not. Do your
research. (And of course, always use anti-virus and even firewall
software).

Hey RK, if it makes you feel better, my wife has trouble listening to me,
too. At least she never seems to hear what I've told her! And I only
have a lisp as a speech impediment! :-) I just thought that was what
marriage is all about! Seriously, my mother-in-law has Parkinson's, had
the brain stimulation implant, and still is hard to understand. Like Tom
Watson said about ALS, "damn this disease". Neurololgical diseases are
horrible, insidious diseases. Take care of yourself.
